Resilience (When Enough Is Enough)
The two responses to danger are fight or flight. When faced with adversity at work, we tend to focus on either changing the situation or running away and finding a different job. Job crafting gives us powerful tools to fight back and turn it around. It enables us to take control of a situation that at first might feel helpless. Being resilient and resourceful is usually the best path—we can’t spend our lives running and the costs associated with it can be incredibly high. Fleeing is usually the higher risk path.
But, there are times when job crafting and meaning-making don’t cut it. There are times when it is important to make a bigger change to a new profession or a new employer. There are situations that are likely beyond crafting, or where the opportunity elsewhere is markedly better than anything that could be crafted. To maximize purpose, there are three reasons to jump ship (other than money).
The cliché, backed by research, is that most people take a job for the organization and leave because of their manager. No manager is perfect, but there are managers who are simply not a good fit for someone, or worse yet, are incompetent and undermining the teamwork of those around them. It may be possible to find a new manager inside an organization, but if someone is locked into a bad fit, it may require jumping ship.
Another reason to leave is the organization itself. If the values of the organization do not align with an employee, it is rarely something that can be fixed—it becomes an issue of integrity. Working for an organization that does things an employee considers against their values overwhelms any purpose that could be gained by job crafting.
Finally, someone can find that they are in the wrong profession given their purpose drivers. If someone gains purpose from working on policy issues at a societal level, working with individuals as a teacher or doctor without the opportunity to impact larger scale change might feel too limiting. At times, it is better to flee than fight. Or, as President Kennedy said, “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.”
